Check out this postive (and lengthy) review from the film from the June 23, 1989 edition of the San Jose Mercury. As with most reviews of the time, the writer compares the film to the 60's show quite a bit, something that didn't happen much with the later films. It just goes to show what a stigma the 60's show left on the Batman character... and just how much the 1989 film erased that moving forward.
Here's a quick snippet on the merchandise attached to the film from the May 5-7, 1989 edition of USA Weekend. Note that this was published before the film helped move Batman away from "Pow! Splat! Kapow!" and "Holy ______ Batman!". :)
A segment from the March 21, 1989 edition of Entertainment Tonight focusing on the merchandising of the film. The '89 Bat-flick was one of the most brilliantly merchandised movies of all time- This video gives just a small taste of it.
Oh- And make sure to take a close look at the Toy Biz Batman Movie toys shown in this segment! They are the original prototypes for the line and are not the final production pieces.
